Step Up To Total Consecration

ABSOLUTE SURRENDER TO JESUS CHRIST

How do I know if I am totally surrendered to Jesus Christ? It is a question many of us should ask ourselves today. How do I know if I am surrendered to Christ Jesus completely? I grew up in a Christian home, studied at a Christian college, got married, worked for Christian institutions.
Surrender is a battle phrase. It implies giving up all rights to the victor. When an opposing army surrenders, they lay down their arms, and the winners take control from then on. Surrendering to God works the same way. God has a plan for our lives, and surrendering to Him means we set aside our own plans and eagerly pursue his alone. The good news is that God’s plan for us is always in our best interest (Jeremiah 29:11), unlike our own plans that often lead to destruction (Proverbs 14:12). Our Lord is wise and favourable victor; He conquers us to bless us.

Pure Surrender

The picture of surrender is that once we were enemies and our lives were at odds with God. We did not submit to Him. We were not surrendered to Him. We were our own masters, doing our own will, robbing God of not only everything He has given to us, but our souls as also. Suddenly, a miracle happens: We were born again, and everything turns around. We do not want to withhold anything from God anymore. We are eager to be totally at his disposal: to do anything he wants at any cost. We want to do it in the power that He supplies, so that in everything He gets the glory. That is what it means to be saved from the old way. So, the reality of admit defeat is there, remember Isaiah 6:8.
Here are some ways that the Bible talks about what it means by total or full surrender to Christ.

  • Luke 14:33: “Any one of you who does not renounce all that he has cannot be my disciple.”
  • Matthew 10:37: “Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me.”
  • Matthew 22:37: “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.”
  • Philippians 3:7–8: “Whatever gain I had, I counted as loss for the sake of Christ. Indeed, I count everything as loss because of the surpassing worth of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord. For his sake I have suffered the loss of all things and count them as rubbish, in order that I may gain Christ.”
  • Romans 6:13 says that God demands that we surrender the totality of ourselves; He wants the whole, not a part: “Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to him as an instrument of righteousness.” Jesus said that his followers must deny themselves (Mark 8:34)—another call to surrender.
  • The goal of the Christian life can be summed up by Galatians 2:20: “I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.” Such a life of surrender is pleasing to God, results in the greatest human fulfilment, and will reap ultimate rewards here and in heaven (Luke 6:22-23).
